Tony learned to play golf at a very young age at his family-owned Lakeview Golf Course in Hartville. He played and won many junior golf tournaments before his high school career.

At Lake High School, Tony was a four-year letter winner. In 1984, he was named Senate League player of the year, OHSAA district champion, and a tenth-place finish in the high school state championship.

Tony went on to play four years of college golf at Malone University under legendary coach Ken Hyland. In 1988, he was named Mid-Ohio Conference player of the year.

After graduating from Malone, Tony turned pro and continued to teach and promote the game of golf in Stark County. As a professional, he has won many Northern Ohio PGA events, with highlights including being named Northern Ohio Player of the Year and qualifying for the national senior club pro championship in Oregon.

Tony and his wife, Diana, have two children, Brianna and Alec.

Foxy Golf has been a supporter of Stark County Golf and the Stark County Golf Hall of Fame for many years.

Foxy Golf is the title sponsor of The Stark County Amateur Championship and has been very generous with their support.

Today, Foxy is owned and operated by Joe Durkin. The business was started in 1972 by Dan Verklas in his garage, where he repaired golf clubs. Dan, known as Foxy Dan, from his days as a musician and singer at local clubs in the Akron-Canton area, opened a golf store on Turkeyfoot Lake Road in Akron in 1980. In 1986, Dan hired Joe Durkin to help run the growing golf store. Joe purchased the business in 2002.

Ofer Golf - Stark County Amateur Golf Hall of Fame - Class of 2026Ofer Golf

Following World War II, John Ofer returned to his home in Canton. Upon his return, John worked as a carpenter, and on the side, he refinished and repaired golf clubs in his garage.

The golf repair business grew rapidly, and John and his wife Evelyn opened Ofer Golf in the old Ink Apple House building on Fulton Rd in Canton.

Ofer Golf built and repaired clubs for golfers in the Canton-Akron area and around the USA. Some of Ofer Golf’s well-known customers included Bobby Nichols, Charlie Wipperman, Frank Beley, Chuck Rotar, Don Nist, Buzz Miller, George Bush Sr., and Bill Clinton .

John Ofer invented the 3-1 driver, which was way ahead of its time. The 3-1 driver was sold all over the world.

Ofer Golf sponsored the Stark County Amateur Golf Association Tournament of Champions year-end tournament and awarded the winner with a green Jacket.
